About

I started my career as a software engineer in 2024 and have been in the industry for more than 2 years now. During this period the industry has considerably changed and I am in a constant pursuit of where I wanna be in 10 years. If you ask me what my dream is, it’s being involved in theoretical fields that lead to science breakthroughs.

My Life

Growing up in Colombo, Sri Lanka, I really liked mathematics and even finished top of my school in it. So this pull towards problem solving led me to earning a BSc in Computer Science at Memorial University. Today I’m a software engineer at Enaimco building software for subsea integrity management.

Throughout my childhood I’ve been obsessed with marine life. I still remember the first book I read about whales and how I’ve always had a deep connection to marine environments. I keep telling to my friends that I really want to dive with whales and to this date I haven’t but hopefully I can one day. I recently read a book called ‘How to Speak Whale’ by Tom Mustill that opened my eyes to how I can use my foundation in Computer Science to learn how we can communicate with these animals. 80% of the ocean remains unexplored which makes me even more excited for the future.

Current Work

I’m currently working on modelling a subsea operations context and their lifecycles using domain driven design as a part of my job. Outside of my job, I’m learning and reading about Marine Science and Machine Learning.

Research Interests

I’m interested in the field of marine bioacoustics and cetacean communication and how I can use machine learning to bridge this gap. I’m open to volunteering in both technical and field work related to this area to gain experience. While this is my main interest, I’m also open to any research field that bridges marine science with machine learning.
